The Black Hole: A lesson plan

After the excitement of IATEFL and being the sort of person who is always seeking a new challenge, I decided to use some of my IATEFL scholarship money (there’s still a few days for you to apply for a 2022 scholarship, if you haven’t already) and sign up for a course on Materials Writing with the wonderful John Hughes through Oxford Teachers Academy. And what a great course it was! John guided us through the nuts and bolts of what’s needed to create effective ELT materials, looking at the different sub-skills, and patiently answering all of our questions. It’s been great to connect with people from all over the world and I know the conversation won’t stop here!

Our latest assignment was to create some exercises based around video and so I’m sharing here a lesson plan aimed at B1/B1+ students on a great short film from futureshorts.com called, “The Black Hole”. This lesson will get your learners describing office life, using the third conditional to analyse the mistakes our main character made in the film, before getting stuck into a roleplay which is sure to raise a few eyebrows.

You can download the students worksheet here.

The teachers notes, giving step-by-step instructions, answer keys, ideas for fast finishers and anticipated problems can be downloaded here.

Enjoy it and let me know what your leaners think!
